What was a red flag that made you stop talking to a person immediately?

We were vacationing in Jamaica. I was sitting next to a guy at the little tiki bar at our hotel. As we were having a conversation I noticed he would tap his cigarette ashes onto the bar instead of using the ashtray. He then yelled to the bartender..” hey boy! Get over here and clean this up!” Which he did. I immediately got up and sat on the other side of the bar. So rude and embarrassing.

----------------------------

I grew up on a ranch and trained all of our horses. We used to team pen (team penning is a rodeo event) and have met a ton of people from all over the United States, even Canada. One summer I met a very handsome guy at a penning, “Jake”, and was pleasantly surprised to find out he only lived an hour away from me. We had amazing chemistry and started seeing each other as often as we could. After two months of dating, he invited me out to his place to spend the weekend. I fancied myself madly in love already, so I eagerly packed my bags and drove up.

When I got there, he was working with a young colt in the round pen. I stood at the rail and watched, curious about his technique. You can learn just about all you’ll ever need to know about someone by how they treat animals while training, even what kind of lover they are. I thought that based on what I had seen of him so far, Jake was a gentle and loving soul, and expected to see that as he worked.

Something about Jake was off, he seemed agitated and jumpy. So did the horse. I was about to ask if he wanted some help or to take a break when out of nowhere… WHAM!!… Jake suddenly lashed out with the lead rope and hit the colt in the face with it. He started yelling and cursing, was extremely frustrated, and actually tried to kick the poor horse at one point.

Horrified, I immediately got back in my truck and left. I heard him call out to me, asking where I was going, then when I ignored him he yelled, “Fine, just leave then, you weak bitch. If you can’t stomach this, then you have no business being in my life!” As well as some choice curse words flung at my back. I was terrified he might try to chase me down, he sounded that unhinged. I just wanted as much distance between us as possible. My phone went off several times during the drive but felt too scared to even talk to him on the phone. When I got home and finally checked it, I saw that I had 5 missed calls, 5 voicemails, and 12 text messages, each one more nasty than the last. I blocked his number and then called the sheriff in his town to report what I had seen. The woman I spoke to said that it wasn’t the first time they had received complaints about Jake. I don’t know what happened with that investigation or if there even was one conducted.

After that, I saw him a couple of times at pennings, but we pretended to not see one another. When I moved and quit penning, I remember feeling a bit relieved knowing I’d probably never run into him again. I was always afraid he would hurt me in retaliation and anger.

Since then I’ve met two of his ex-girlfriends and both confirmed that when he got drunk or had even just a little bit of alcohol in his system, he would lose his temper and beat them. It happened several times before they finally got themselves away from him. One of them pressed charges and he did jail time for it. I also learned that no one would sell him their horses, because he’s known to be violent towards them. I sure wish someone had warned me about him. I’m just grateful it ended before it began.

That is probably one of the biggest red flags there is: If someone can be cruel and violent towards an animal, they can damn well be cruel and violent towards you or a child.

What should you never say to a British person?

What should you never say to a British person?

I was on a plane once, flying across the US. The guy next to me (in the middle seat) just kept talking nonstop. Eventually, the person in the window seat said something back to him. This set the guy off, he told him everything he knew about Australia, what a great country it was, how much he liked Australians. Then he asked what part of Australia the guy was from. He replied that he was from Wales.

The middle-seat guy said he loved New South Wales. The Sydney Opera House was his favorite piece of architecture in the world.

Window seat guy, replies, No, I am Welsh, from the British Isles.

Middle seat guy, just wouldn't let it go. He wanted to know why someone from the UK spoke with an Australian accent. Eventually window seat guy lost his patience, and pointedly pulled out a book and started to read.

So, I would say you don't ask someone from Wales, why they speak with an Australian accent

"For 20 years I never had a father. I never met him. Heard of his name. I saw a picture. I was in a terrible home. So, at age 15 I decided to run away. I graduated high school with AP credit and Honors. So even though I was homeless and bouncing from friend’s house to house. When I was 17, I heard my mother was incarcerated for drunk driving. I was officially alone. I always wanted to take martial arts but obviously too poor. Graduated high school got a job and started saving money for lessons. I started at age 20 and 4 months later I met this guy. Grandmaster Ji. He asked me what my dreams were or goals. He said he felt that I had hardships that most didn't know. I told him I wanted to become a martial arts master and run a school. He told me from that day forward two things would happen. One, that he would make me a master, and two, that I would be called his son from now on. This is a true father to me. He is a wonderful example of love and justice and doing the right thing. Just wanted to share this with some people. I love my dad, and meeting him took me 20 years."

The Emperor's New Clothes /

The Emperor's New Clothes"
Short story by Hans Christian Andersen

There is an emperor who has an obsession with fancy new clothes, and spends lavishly on them, at the expense of state matters. One day, two con men visit the city where said emperor lives, and posing as weavers, they offer to supply him with magnificent clothes that are invisible to those who are unfit for their post, or a fool. The emperor hires them, and they set up looms and pretend to go to work. A succession of officials, starting with the emperor's wise and competent minister, and then ending with the emperor himself, visit them to check their progress. Each sees that the looms are empty but pretends otherwise to avoid being thought a fool.

Finally, the weavers report that the emperor's suit is finished. They mime dressing him and he sets off in a procession before the whole city, naked. The townsfolk uncomfortably go along with the pretense, not wanting to appear inept or stupid, until a child blurts out that the emperor is wearing nothing at all. The people then realize that everyone has been fooled. Although startled, the emperor opts to continue the procession, walking more proudly than ever.
