Proverb คือ สำนวน หรือสุภาษิต ไม่ต้องแปลกใจค่ะว่าต่างประเทศมีสุภาษิตเหมือนกันด้วยหรือ แน่นอนค่ะว่าทุกประเทศย่อมมีสำนวน เปรียบเปรยเป็นของตนเอง ในเชิงความหมายอาจจะคล้ายกัน จนถึงเหมือนกันทุกนัยความเลยก็ได้ ฉะนั้นวันนี้ดิฉันจึงมีสำนวนสุภาษิตใหม่ของภาษาอังกฤษมาให้ทุกคนได้ลองจำไปใช้กันดู อีกทั้งยังมีเกมไว้พัฒนาความจำให้อีกด้วยนะคะ
A mad man is not responsible for his actions. = คนบ้าไม่ต้องรับผิดชอบในการกระทำของเขา
It’s a sad house where the hen crows louder than the cock. = สามีเป็นช้างเท้าหน้า ภรรยาเป็นช้างเท้าหลัง
Marriage is an expensive luxury. = การแต่งงานเป็นของฟุ่มเฟือยที่แสนแพง
There is no fool like an old fool. =ไม่มีใครโง่เกินคนแก่โง่
Kill not the goose that lays the golden eggs. = โลภมากลาภหาย.
Facts are stubborn things. = ความจริงล้างอย่างไรก็ไม่เลือนหาย
It is a foolish sheep that makes the wolf its confessor. = อย่าชี้โพรงให้กระรอก
Brave actions never want trumpet. = การกระทำอันกล้าหาญ ไม่จำเป็นต้องป่าวประกาศให้ใครรู้
Good manners are part and parcel of a good education. = กิริยามารยาทที่สุภาพเรียบร้อย เป็นส่วนสำคัญจากการได้รับการศึกษาดี
A bad workman always blames his tool. = รำไม่ดีโทษปี่โทษกลอง
Habituate yourself to hard work. = จงฝึกฝนตัวเองให้เคยชินกับงานหนัก
Fine features make fine birds. = ไก่งามเพราะขน คนงามเพราะแต่ง
Big fish eat little fish. = ปลาใหญ่กินปลาเล็ก
A friend in need is a friend indeed = เพื่อนแท้คือเพื่อนในยามยาก
Birds of a feather flock together = คบคนพาล พาลพาไปหาผิด
Actions speak louder than words = ทำดีกว่าพูด
A bird in head is worth two in the bush = สิบเบี้ยใกล้มือ
A rolling stone gathers no moss = รู้รักษาตัวรอดเป็นยอดดี
Absence makes the heart grow fonder = ตัวไกลใจอยู่ยิ่งไกลก็ยิ่งรักกัน
Make hay while the sun shines = น้ำขึ้นให้รีบตัก
He laughs best who laughs last = หัวเราะทีหลังดังกว่า
Listeners hear no good of themselves = นินทากาเลเหมือนเทน้ำ
It is never too late to mend = ไม่มีอะไรสายสำหรับการเริ่มต้น
Still water runs deep = น้ำนิ่งไหลลึก
Good cloths open all doors. = ไก่งามเพราะขน คนงามเพราะแต่ง
Overtly agree but coertly oppose = ปากว่าตาขยิบ หรือพูดอีกอย่างแต่ทำอีกอย่าง
Cry for the moon = กระต่ายหมายจันทร์ หมายถึงหนุ่มหมายปองสาวที่มีฐานะดีกว่า
Apple of sodom =สวยแต่รูป จูบไม่หอม งามภายนอกแต่ใจแย่ไง
When misfortune reaches the limit, good fortune is at hand = ต้นร้ายปลายดี เริ่มต้นไม่ดีแต่ไปดีเอาตอนหลัง
Between the devil and the deep blue sea = หนีเสือปะจรเข้
Be caught red-handed = จับได้คาหนังคาเขา
To take for a needle in a haystack = งมเข็มในมหาสมุทร
To eat one's cake and have it too = จับปลาสองมือ
To take something with a pinch of salt = ฟังหูไว้หู ฟังแล้วคิดพิจารณาก่อนจะเชื่อ
As you sow, so you reap = ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว
Cannot make head or tail of = จับต้นชนปลายไม่ถูก
Where there is a will, there is a way = ความพยายามอยู่ที่ไหน ความสำเร็จอยู่ที่นั่น
Look before you leap = จงดูให้ดีก่อนจะกระโดด หมายถึง คิดให้ดี รอบคอบก่อนที่จะทำอะไร
Prevention is better than cure = กันไว้ดีกว่าแก้
Do as Romans do when you are in Rome = เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม
Joy and sorrow are as near as today and tomorrow. = ความสุขกับความทุกข์อยู่ใกล้กันเหมือนวันนี้กับวันพรุ่งนี้
"Time and tide wait for no man" = เวลาและกระแสน้ำไม่เคยคอยใคร
Everyone thinks his own burden the heaviest. = ทุกคนมักคิดว่าภาระของตนหนักกว่าของผู้อื่นเสมอ
No one is too old to learn = ไม่มีใครแก่เกินเรียน
Reading makes a full man. = การอ่านหนังสือทำให้เป็นคนที่สมบูรณ์
All men naturally desire to know. = มนุษย์ทุกคนย่อมอยากรู้โดยธรรมชาติ
Be quick to hear and slow to speak.= ฟังให้เร็ว แต่พูดให้ช้า
Live to learn to live. = จงอยู่เพื่อเรียนรู้การดำรงชีวิต
Words once spoken cannot be altered. = คำพูดที่กล่าวไปแล้ว ย่อมไม่อาจจะเปลี่ยนแปลงได้
No one is harmed by thinking. =การไตร่ตรองยั้งคิด ไม่เคยทำอันตรายใคร
Order will render the work facile. = ความมีระเบียบวินัย เป็นสิ่งที่ทำให้การทำงานราบรื่นขึ้น
Every obstacle is surmountable. = อุปสรรคทุกอย่าง ย่อมผ่านพ้นไปได้เสมอ
Health is wealth. = ความไม่มีโรคเป็นลาภอันประเสริฐ
What can't be cured must be endured. =เมื่อสิ่งใดหมดทางที่จะแก้ไขได้แล้ว ก็ต้องยอมรับและทนในสิ่งนั้น
Peace begins where ambition ends. = ความสงบจะเริ่มขึ้น ณ ที่ซึ่งความเห่อเหิม ทะเยอทะยานได้สิ้นสุดลงแล้ว
Happiness belong to the contented. =บุคคลจะมีความสุขหรือไม่นั้น ขึ้นอยู่กับความพอใจ
Don't shrink any task because of its arduousness. =อย่าละทิ้งงานใดๆ เพียงเห็นว่างานนั้นยาก
The tongue is like a sharp knife; it kills without drawing blood.= ลิ้นเหมือนมีดคม สามารถฆ่าได้โดยไม่มีเลือดตก
